Adding AdSense to your website only takes a few minutes, and you can easily be on your way with one or more nicely integrated AdSense ads. The very first thing you will need to do is go here – http://www.google.com/adsense and either apply or log in with your existing account and password. You will then see a page showing the Google AdSense Terms and Conditions which you will have to agree to, to continue.

You will then be shown a report page, which is where you can see all your stats and how your adsense ads are doing and how much you are earning. This enables you to improve your site’s contents and layout to increase your AdSense earnings. On the top of your page you also have link to the setup section where you can create specific ads for any part of you website, you can choose colors, size and even what type of ad, and it will generate a code that you can just add to your website and it will appear. Today, there are five types of ads you can place, adsense for content (the most used one), adsense for search, adsense for feeds, video units and adsense for mobile content, however, they are always adding new ideas. Your choice among these options depends on how users will navigate your site.

Finally, there is a “My Account” tab which allows you to set up details concerning your account, payment and tax information. To add an ad on your site, go back to the “AdSense Setup” tab and click the “AdSense for content” link, I am only using it as an example as it is the most popular. Make sure you have cookies enabled in your browser. You can now make a choice between ad units and link units. The link units allow your visitors to choose a link, then look at a broader view of it, but it looks worse and less ‘I want to click that!’ to your visitors, so I normally go with the ad unit and choose both text and images.

Of course, it’s a bit hard to know which type you should use so you should probably try out a few different ones before you decide.

You can also view an example of how the unit will look, just click the “Preview This Adsense Unit”. However, you may only use three ad units and one link unit on any given page. This is believed to be a step which Google takes for quality control, only use around two to four ads on each page otherwise it gets extremely unattractive to your visitors and could cause them to leave your site.

The next part is for you to choose your ad format and colors. You can basically select any colors one your ad you choose with Google offering easy to use colour chosers, you can customize it very easily. You can constantly view how the palette will look through the aid of an example. The one that works best in terms of appearance and revenues will be different for each site, but generallty, try to blend them, so make the background and border the same as your actual background where the ad will be placed and make the text the same colour as some of you other text, but always make the header look like links on you page or people could just thing it is content and just read it.

Your ad formats are limited to a choice of twelve formats. There’s an “Ad Formats” link which takes you to a page that lets you see all twelve of these in action so you can decide best which one suits your site. Sometimes the most intrusive, does not work very well, but this can vary from website to website. After you finish with customization, you just click “Continue” from the bottom of the page. There you have it, you have sucessfully generated an adsense ad, you can click anywhere in the text and that shows the code required to get AdSense running. This will automatically select the text in the box.

You can then copy it and paste it into your pages directly. If you use dynamic pages, pages with templates and so on, you should paste this code within your template so as to ensure that it gets displayed on any page of your website, easy as pie :D some advertisers choose not to display Adsense on every page, and this is understandable, for example, not many people have ads on pages saying “Contact Us” or “About Us”, or more importantly a page with temrs and conditions.

Well, now you are all done! For a simple page this should indeed be a matter of a few minutes, which is precisely what makes AdSense the choice for so many people these days. Although it is quick, its mass appeal also makes it the best. Through being the most popular, advertisers and publishers alike see Adsense and Adwords as their natural first choice, I hope you do too and this article has helped you start your first adsense revenue site.
